Star Wars Badge Art Celebration Japan 2025

Updated: 1 day ago

Since 1999, Star Wars Celebration badges have showcased a variety of characters through unique artistic interpretations. These badges, required for entry, often become treasured mementos of the event. Star Wars Celebration Japan is coming to town from April 18-20, 2025, and it's bringing something special: 17 stunning event badges that blend the iconic Star Wars universe with traditional Japanese art.

Meet the Artist: TAKUMI

These eye-catching badges were created by Japanese artist TAKUMI, whose impressive credentials include:

  • Winner of the "Weekly Shonen Jump" Rookie Award (2012)

  • Previous collaboration with Lucasfilm for The Mandalorian season three

  • Contributor to Marvel's Thor: Love and Thunder

TAKUMI has a deep interest in modern ukiyo-e and has worked on official merchandise designs for several artists and Japanese anime. He has innovatively reimagined iconic Star Wars characters using ukiyo-e, a traditional Japanese art form that thrived from the 17th to 19th centuries. Each badge features characters dressed in traditional Japanese clothing, placed against familiar Japanese motifs, including:

- Cherry blossoms

- Mount Fuji

- The moon

- Traditional landscapes

Characters From Across the Galaxy

The complete set of 17 badges includes characters spanning the entire Star Wars saga:

  • Darth Vader

  • Luke Skywalker

  • Ahsoka Tano

  • The Mandalorian and Grogu

  • Queen Amidala

  • C-3PO and R2-D2

  • Leia Organa

  • Rey/Kylo Ren

  • Obi-Wan Kenobi/Anakin Skywalker

  • Cassian Andor

  • Mon Mothma

  • Characters from Young Jedi Adventures

Ukiyo-e designs

Each design incorporates seasonal and natural elements following traditional ukiyo-e techniques (as seen in above image). "While not every flower or plant has a specific meaning, I chose certain motifs based on how well they matched the character's theme color or traits," TAKUMI explains.

These badges continue a tradition stretching back to the first Celebration in 1999. While necessary to enter the event, they often become prized keepsakes long after the excitement of new friends, rare moments, and first reveals have receded into memory.

"I poured my heart into these pieces with pure love, respect and appreciation," says TAKUMI, who will be attending his first Star Wars Celebration. "I hope fans will enjoy the fusion of the Star Wars universe with traditional Japanese culture."
